This Safety Consultant plays an important role in Keeping Washington Safe and Working by providing onsite consultation to small business employers in construction and high hazard fixed industries. You will help employers understand the process and their responsibilities in achieving the ultimate goal of workplace safety through; safety programs, employee training, hazard abatement, reducing claims and safely managing their workforce.
As a Safety Consultant, you will effectively consult, motivate, and advise employers of methods to eliminate unsafe work practices, procedures and hazards. You will analyze employer's accident records, industrial insurance data, and safety and health inspection and consultation histories to determine what additional services and or programs to recommend.
This position can be filled as a Safety & Health Specialist 3 or be filled as an in-training opportunity to develop the required skills within this specialized field. If filled as a Safety & Health Specialist 3 in-training, you'll need to successfully complete a formal training plan. The plan is designed to provide classroom and on the job training to encourage qualified and enthusiastic individuals to exert their best effort to learn and enhance their skills. Upon successful competition of the in-training plan, you will progressively advance to the goal of Safety & Health Specialist 3.
**Some of what you'll do:**
* Travel to employers' business and worksite to conduct onsite safety consultation.
* Perform complex safety surveys and advise employers of methods to eliminate unsafe work practices, procedures and hazards. Research accident and injury records.
* Evaluate employer worksite and assist employers in developing required safety and health programs.
* Assess worksite and present verbal and written safety reports to customers and monitor status and findings.
* Develop and conduct training seminars, forums and other presentations for employers, employees and associations.
* Field questions originating from phone calls, email, and face to face visits with customers.
* Promote Division of Safety and Health (DOSH) consultation services, education and outreach.
* Conduct marketing efforts on the phone, at businesses, trade shows, conferences and seminars.
* Attend and participate in trainings, symposiums, meeting, rule reviews, committees or task forces.
**Who should apply**
Professionals with a thorough understanding of safety and health rules and regulations, ability to explain to customers what their business must do to comply with these regulations. Experience in construction trade or industries.
**_To qualify at the SHS 3 in-training level, the following is required:_**
A Bachelor's degree from an ABET Accredited program in Occupational Safety & Health or Safety & Health Management
A bachelor's degree, AND two years of experience as a safety and health manager, industrial occupational safety consultant, industrial occupational safety inspector, or related experience;
Four years of full-time journey level experience in the following industries: logging, construction, manufacturing, health/medical, or related experience,** AND** two years of experience as a safety and health manager, industrial occupational safety consultant, industrial occupational safety inspector, or related experience.
**_To qualify at the SHS 3, the following is required:_**
Three years as L&I; Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist;
a Bachelor's degree **AND** three years of experience as a safety and health officer, Safety and Health consultant, industrial occupational inspector, or related experience;
Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: logging, construction, manufacturing, health/medical, or related experience, and three years of experience as a safety and health officer, safety and health consultant, industrial occupational inspector, or related experience.
*College-level education will substitute, year for year, for up to four years of non-safety and health experience. Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.*
**What we're looking for:**
* Extensive knowledge of occupational health and safety standards and best practices.
* Experience leading complex consultations or inspections.
* Skilled at conducting training and delivering presentations to large groups.
* Demonstrates strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, set priorities and meet deadlines.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Comfortable and confident to actively market consultation services to employers.
* Ability to analyze statistical data and reach a logical conclusion; develop methods and techniques for solving employers' health and safety problems.
* Demonstrated customer service; friendly, personable.
* Bilingual preferred

Work in varying weather conditions; occasionally on weekends, holidays, nights and overnight shifts; travel to locations including remote locations, which may require multiple overnight stays.

Within the Department of Labor and Industries, conditional to hazard exposure: Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Specialists are paid base salary plus four (4) ranges for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hat, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous workspace to inspect or investigate a fatality or serious incident that still has the hazard present and is unsecured.
